Short version: Japan Quests has no account and no server of its own. Your visits, your stamps and your photos stay on your phone. The only data that leaves the device is what Google Play needs to process a purchase, plus the ordinary web requests your phone makes to download place photos.
Who is responsible
Japan Quests is an independent Android app published by an individual developer based in Japan. For any question about this policy, write to hello@akiyalabs.com.
What stays on your phone
The app stores the following locally, in its own private storage, with no copy sent anywhere:
- the places you have checked in to, and the date of each check-in
- whether a check-in was confirmed by GPS or logged manually
- your wishlist, your favourite stamps and favourite stamp books
- your badges and the date each was earned
- your interface language, your passport colour and your map filters
- the photos you attach to a place in the journal
There is no sign-up, no login, no profile and no synchronisation. Because nothing is stored on a server, uninstalling the app deletes this data permanently — which is why the app offers an export file (see below).
Location
Location is used only in the foreground, and only when you ask for it: when you tap the check-in button on a place, or when you turn on the “near me” map filter. Your coordinates are compared with the coordinates of the place on the device to work out the distance. They are not transmitted, not stored in a history, and not attached to your check-ins.
The app never requests background location and cannot track you while it is closed. If you refuse the permission, everything still works — you simply log your visits manually.
Photos
When you add a photo to a place, the app copies it from your gallery into its own storage. Photos are never uploaded, never analysed and never leave your phone. If you use the automatic backup feature, they are written into the backup file, in the folder you chose on your own device.
Purchases
The lifetime unlock is a one-off, non-consumable purchase processed by Google Play. We never see or receive your payment details.
To know whether the unlock is active, the app uses RevenueCat, a purchase-validation service. RevenueCat receives a randomly generated app user identifier, the purchase itself and technical device identifiers. This is why the app's Data safety section on Google Play declares purchase history and device or other identifiers as collected — required for the feature to work, and not shared with third parties for advertising.
Photos of places, and network requests
Photos of places and the stamp images are downloaded from our storage on Cloudflare R2 the first time you display them. Like any request on the internet, that request carries your IP address and is handled by Cloudflare's infrastructure. We do not attach any identifier to those requests and do not build a browsing profile from them. Once downloaded, images are cached on your device and work offline.
What the app does not do
- no advertising, and no advertising identifier is read
- no analytics, tracking or attribution SDK
- no social network login, no contact list, no microphone
- no selling or sharing of personal data — there is nothing to sell
Backups
The export file you create yourself is written where you choose and is never sent to us. If you enable automatic backup, the app rewrites that same file in the folder you picked, on your device or on your own cloud storage if that folder is synced by another app of your choosing.
Independently of the app, Android may include app data in its own automatic backup to your Google Drive, depending on your device settings. That mechanism belongs to Android and is governed by Google's privacy policy; you can disable it in your Android settings.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Your rights
Since there is no account and no server-side profile, there is no personal data for us to look up, correct or export on your behalf. To erase everything the app holds about you, uninstall it or use “Clear data” in Android's app settings. For purchases and refunds, contact Google Play, or write to us and we will help.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected, the date at the top of this page changes and the new version is published here before the corresponding app update ships.
